So after we reflect on the abysmal performance against Watford, its pretty easy to see what went wrong. The players lacked commitment, no desire to run or win the ball and simply were not good enough against a Watford side who to be fair are doing fantastic this season.
One thing that really has annoyed me in the last few games is the defending or should i say the lack of it. Before Sakho got injured we looked quite solid, now we are simply all over the place. Lovren came in and to be fair did pretty well compared to his previous bad standards. But the man who has been quite poor lately is Martin Skrtel.
First let’s look at the Newcastle game. An own goal from Skrtel that came from his bad positioning. As a defender myself i understand the term defend at all costs but he has a habbit of throwing his body on the line and as a result scoring a ridiculous amount of own goals along the way. The main thing thought that worried me was his positional play in the lead up to the goal.
As you can see above, he is miles ahead of everyone else who are keeping the line they should be. This is schoolboy stuff we are talking about here. Im going to pick on Clyne a little also as although he has a man running ahead of him, he should have been shouting a Skrtel to hold the line as if he does there is a good chance he be offside. Then i bring you to a similar snenario against Watford.
Once again Skrtel is way to deep and inviting Watford to play that ball over the top. Which is exactly what happened. Skrtel to make things worse made a very poor attempt to defend and Bogdan’s position for the shot was poor. But once again Clyne can see the whole line and should be given his team mate a call to get the f*ck up. He didnt and we paid the price.
On a day that Sakho did a Boateng and got made a holy show of, i think its good to say that this was not just a bad day at the office but a performance that left most Liverpool’s bemused and angry at how our results against City, Chelsea and Southampton are now almost forgotten and a realisation that we have a huge problem once again.
