A European night under the Anfield lights, will it be a classic? Liverpool host Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 at 20:00. After a smash and grab 0-1 win in the first leg will the Reds hold on at Anfield?

Braquage A L’Anglaise – English Robbery

French newspaper L’Equippe branded the first leg a burglary. Liverpool defended in numbers for the majority of the game. PSG had 27 attempts compared to just 2 for Liverpool. Alisson’s nine saves were the most recorded by any Liverpool goalkeeper in a Champions League game since Opta started recording data in 2003-04. Harvey Elliott was surprisingly subbed on for Mohamed Salah and scored after just 46 seconds with Liverpool’s only shot on target.

Paris Saint-Germain secured a 1-4 victory away to Rennes on Saturday. Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha, and Nuno Mendes were all brought on as substitutes, with none playing more than 25 minutes. Fabian Ruiz and Gianluigi Donnarumma were unused substitutes, while captain Marquinhos was absent from the matchday squad. All eight players have been included in the PSG travelling squad.

Luis Enrique “I am pretty convinced that every single one of my players wants to play. We know what it means to play at Anfield.”

PSG at Anfield

Vitinha, the Portuguese midfielder, claimed PSG were the better side despite their loss at the Parc des Princes and vowed to set things right in the return leg.

“We’re going to show what a team we are, we’re going to show our character.”

“We’re going to win there [at Liverpool].”

However, no Ligue 1 side has managed to win against a Premier League side in European competitions in the last 15 matches they’ve played in England.

PSG have only visited Anfield twice, suffering defeat on both occasions. In the 1978 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, they lost 2-0, though they advanced 3-2 on aggregate. Their most recent trip came during the 2018-2019 UEFA Champions League group stage on their way to Madrid. Daniel Sturridge was replaced by Roberto Firmino, who scored a 90th-minute winner, sealing a 3-2 victory for Liverpool. Firmino then celebrated with his iconic one-eye gesture.

Team News

Cody Gakpo was back in training at the AXA Training Centre on Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, and Tyler Morton will remain sidelined due to their respective injuries.

Additionally, Harvey Elliott, Ibrahima Konate, Alexis Mac Allister, Andy Robertson, and Virgil van Dijk are all at risk of missing the quarter-final first leg if they receive a yellow card in this match and the Reds advance.

Other than the changes made at the weekend for PSG there is little team news to report. Luis Enrique stated in his pre-match press conference:

I’m not going to give away who is going to play tomorrow or how we’re going to play tomorrow.”

The 22-man traveling squad consists of the exact same players who were part of Luis Enrique’s match-day squad last week when the Reds secured victory in Paris.
