The 22 Year Wait

Kieran McKenna won back to back promotions to propel Ipswich back into the top flight after a 22 year absence. The Tractor Boys haven’t lit up the Premier League on their return, with only 3 wins from their opening 22 games they currently sit 18th in the table on 16 points. However, they’ve earned 56% of their points away from home this season.

Ipswich have had a busy January so far signing Jaden Philogene from Aston Villa for £20m aswell as welcoming former toffee Ben Godfrey and the exciting Julio Enciso on loan. Some much needed Premier League experience for a side, on current form, set for a relegation fight in May.

Tractor Boys

Liam Delap caught the eye of Ipswich after a successful loan spell at Hull City last season. The 21 year old signed for a fee of £20m this summer from Manchester City. He’s been their main goal outlet this season with 8 goals so far this season. Christian Walton in goal has recently become the starter again, off back of Arijanet Muric making several costly mistakes in games leading to vocal criticism from some in the fanbase. Skipper Sam Morsy has played at every level of professional English football, he’ll be excited to share the pitch with Egyptian international team-mate Mohamed Salah.

Last Time Out

The last time Ipswich played at Anfield in the Premier League was on the final day of the season in 2002. Ipswich, in a relegation battle, had any lingering hopes of survival ended with 5–0 defeat.

The reds trip to Portman Road on the opening day this season was a cagey one for the first 45 minutes. Ipswich battled hard for the opening period. However a tactical change at half-time by Arne Slot in defence seen the reds dominate physically in the second. Goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah were 5 minutes apart and Liverpool seen out a 0-2 win on the road.

Team News

Kieran McKenna will be without injured forwards Conor Chaplin and Sammie Szmodics. Chiedozie Ogbene is expected to be out for the remainder of the campaign. He confirmed Julio Enciso is available to make his Town debut at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s newest addition to the injury list is Curtis Jones after picking up a knock against Lille midweek. Arne said, “The rest we have to wait and see how long it’s going to take. I’m not expecting months… but let’s see if he’s available for PSV or Bournemouth.” He joins Diogo Jota and Joe Gomez in the treatment room.
