Liverpool take a second trip of the season to St Marys as they look to continue their defence of the Carabao Cup tonight at Southampton.

Southampton’s shakey start to the season seen Russel Martin depart the club this weekend following a 0-5 drumming to Spurs. Saints fans will be hopeful of new manager bounce, U21’s manager Simon Rusk has been promoted to take interim control of the first team whilst the board look for a replacement.
Liverpool’s recent league win 3-2 was anything but easy. Returning from the international break Russel Martins side gave Liverpool the lead after making a mistake playing out from the back. Southampton equalised just before half-time from the spot, then Mateus Fernandes sent them in-front early into the second. However, Mohamed Salah would lead the Liverpool comeback to secure all 3 points.

This is the 10th meeting between the sides in the league cup. Both sides have won 4 meetings each in this competition. In 2015 they met at this exact stage at St Marys, Divock Origi scored a hat-trick in a 1-6 win one of the best under Jurgen Klopp.
Southampton will be without captain Jack Stephens and Adam Armstrong who are both suspended. Gavin Bazunu, Ross Stewart, Will Smallbone and Juan Larios are all sidelined. Aaron Ramsdale has been injured with a fractured finger, but is hopeful to make a return tonight.
Arne Slot will be absent on the touchline after accumulating too many yellow cards, Andrew Robertson is also suspended after his red card on Saturday. Conor Bradley and Ibou Konate are both injured, Diogo Jota was also confirmed to be a doubt in Arne’s pre match press conference. He confirmed we can expect some youth prospects to be involved in the match day squad, as well as Caoimhin Kelleher and Federico Chiesa.
