Liverpool travelled down to a gusty south coast with a chance to capitalise on Manchester City’s dropped points the night before. Arne Slot labelled the hosts as ‘much more than capable’ despite their league position in his pre match press conference. With bigger games on the horizon in Real Madrid and Manchester City next week, it would’ve been easy to look past this one.

First Half
Liverpool set the tone inside the first 10 minutes. Dominik Szoboszlai dribbled towards goal before laying the ball off to Mohamed Salah who tested Alex McCarthy in the Southampton goal.
Referee Samual Barrot was eager to keep the game in-order. Yellow cards for Conor Bradley, Ibou Konate and Adam Lallana all inside the first 25 minutes.
Liverpools high press paid off after half an hour. Playing out from the back, Mateus Fernandes was caught under pressure. He played the ball back to Flynn Downes, who cleared it straight into the path of Dominik Szoboszlai. He didn’t need a second invitation, shooting across goal into the top right corner leaving Alex McCarthy with no chance; 1-0.

Just 10 minutes after taking the lead Southampton had the opportunity to equalise from the spot. Tyler Dibling was brought down by Andy Robertson on the 18 yard line, winning a penalty. Adam Armstrong’s penalty was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher diving low to his right-hand side, however he tapped home the follow up to level the score; 1-1.
Second Half
Tyler Dibling had the first effort of the half for the Saints. Dribbling at pace with close control around 3 Liverpool players before blasting a long range effort over the bar.
Just before the hour mark Southampton would launch a counter attack from a Liverpool corner. Tyler Dibling played a lovely cross field ball to Adam Armstrong, who laid in Mateus Fernandes. He dispatched the chance with a neat finish into the bottom corner, leaving Caoimhin Kelleher a statue in the Liverpool goal; 2-1.

A few minutes later, Adam Armstrong went over in the Liverpool box after a challenge from Caoimhin Kelleher. Southampton thought they should’ve had a second penalty.
Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo were introduced just after the hour mark, but neither would be involved in the equaliser. A lofted pass from Ryan Gravenberch found Mohamed Salah who scored in a empty net, catching Alex McCarthy miles out of position; 2-2.

Alex MacAllister was next and struck one over the bar, but the Liverpool hunt for a winner was on. Southampton didn’t touch the ball in Liverpool’s half for around 10 minutes before Yukinari Sugawara handled the ball in his own box, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot.
Mohamed Salah stepped up, Alex McCarthy guessed the right way but ultimately had no chance. Hit with power and precision the Egyptian king scored his 100th away goal, securing all 3 points and sending Liverpool 8 points clear at the top of the table; 2-3.
