Returning from the international break Liverpool travel to St Marys to take on Southampton, 14:00 kick off.

Russel Martin led Southampton back to the top flight through the play-offs last season, but it’s been a tough start to life in the Premier League for the young manager. Currently rock bottom of the table with 1 win, 1 draw and 9 losses, the Saints have work to do. However, they did win last time out at home beating Everton 1-0.

Southampton have struggled in-front of goal, failing to score in 5 of their games so far this season. They’ve only hit the back of the net 7 times in the league, the least of any side. But, they do boast some young talent in England international Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Cameron Archer who’s scored 4 in all competitions. Former red Adam Lallana is likely to start, we all know how dangerous he can be.

Russel Martin has already lost once to Liverpool as Southampton manager. A Jurgen Klopp side featuring James McConnell, Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns won 3-0 at Anfield in the FA Cup last season.

Last time out at St Marys was thrilling 4-4 draw on the final day, however both sides already had their fate sealed in the league. Liverpool have won 4 out of their last 6 trips to Southampton and will come into this one full of confidence.

Arne Slot confirmed Allison Becker, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa will all remain unavalible for this one, but are all nearing a return. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the newest absentee after being subbed off against Aston Villa with what seems to be a minor injury. In more positive news Harvey Elliott looks set to make a return this weekend, after around 10 weeks out with a fractured foot.

Russel Martin is without two goalkeepers as Aaron Ramsdale and Gavin Bazunu are both injured. The experienced Alex McCarthy is the likely starter. Jan Bednarek, Will Smallbone and Ross Stewart are the other absentees.
