Brighton again! Yes indeed, after an end-to-end 2-3 cup classic midweek the roles are reversed for this weekend as Liverpool host Brighton at Anfield 15:00.
Since The Albion’s return to the Premier League in 2017 they’ve proven to be a challenging opponent at Anfield. Picking up 1 win and 2 draws, although falling to the reds on the other 4 occasions. So far this season they’ve managed 7 points out of a possible 12 on the road, with wins coming at St James’s Park against Newcastle United (0-1) and across Stanley Park against Everton (0-3). On their last visit to Anfield Brighton’s current top scorer Danny Welbeck (6) fired them 1 ahead after 2 minutes. However, goals from Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz meant the reds were eventual 2-1 winners.
Brighton rotated heavily on Wednesday night therefore Arne Slot will have a few different threats to think about. Danny Welbeck and Kaoru Mitoma only played for 15 minutes off the bench on Wednesday, they’re both expected to start at Anfield. Bart Verbruggen will be expected back in goal for the Seagulls and Georginio Rutter will be expected to return after being cup tied midweek. Fabian Hurzeler has confirmed that Joao Pedro and Matt O’Riley are returning from injury however, Lewis Dunk and Ferdi Kadioglu need further assessment. Yankuba Minteh, Solly March and Adam Webster all remain out injured, alongside kop favourite James Milner who won’t make a return to the Anfield turf this week.
Arne Slot confirmed no new injury concerns in his pre match press conference. Our head coach did confirm that Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa are unlikely to return until post November international break. Harvey Elliott is continuing his rehab; no update was provided about his return. Most of the regulars were involved midweek whether starting or from the bench. Ryan Gravenberch, who wasn’t on the bench Wednesday, is likely to return to the Liverpool starting 11. Liverpool captain Van Dijk who was an unused sub will be expected to start. The left back position is up for grabs between Kostas Tsimikas, Joe Gomez and Andrew Robertson.
