Mo Salah’s second half penalty sent Liverpool top of the Premier League in a 2-1 victory over Wolves.

Rayan Ait-Nouri had cancelled out Ibrahima Konate’s first half header , but Salah’s penalty ensured Liverpool took all three points.

The win puts the reds first , one point ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal , whilst Wolves sit bottom of the league with just one point from their first six games.

Wolves had been the better side for the first half hour, with Liverpool lacking energy and awareness before the momentum swung Liverpool’s way towards the end of the half.

Dominik Szoboszlai missed a golden opportunity firing a shot straight into goalkeeper Sam Johnstone from Andy Roberston’s inch perfect cross.

On 47 minutes Diogo Jota swung in a cross from the left which Konate converted for his third goal contribution in just three games.

But the Frenchman turned from hero to villain early in the second half.

Miscommunication between Konate and Alisson meant a harmless through ball wasn’t dealt with – allowing Jorgen Strand Larsen to direct the ball back into the box with Rayan Ait-Nouri there to bundle the ball home.

Just minutes later however Liverpool were back on top.

Nelson Semedo was judged to have manhandled Diogo Jota in the box with Mo Salah converting the resulting penalty.

Wolves pushed and probed in the second half but the Liverpool defence stood firm, inflicting a fifth defeat of the season.

Despite conceding a sloppy goal, Liverpool’s defence looked solid throughout, whilst Ryan Gravenberch put in another stellar performance in midfield.

The reds’ attack never fully got going with Luis Diaz failing to add to his electric form and Diogo Jota unable to fully get into the game.

Although the win sends Liverpool top of the league, Arne Slot’s side looked sloppy at times and the Dutch manager will undoubtedly demand an improved performance from his team when they face Bologna in the Champions League on Wednesday.
