Federico Chiesa has been named the Athletics’ best permanent transfer with a fee of the 2024 summer transfer window. The Italian joined Liverpool on the 29 August for £10 million.

Throughout the summer window the Athletic have been scoring transfers based on their Athletic 500 ranking. Chiesa scored 374/500 overall, with Ilkay Gundogan’s return to Manchester City and Raheem Sterling’s loan move to Arsenal the only transfers rated higher than the Chiesa deal. However, Gundogan moved for free, whilst Sterling is only on loan at Arsenal.

The score is based off five categories – Season rating, Gaming rating, Financial Value, Tactical and Risk or Reward.

Chiesa’s highest score was his gaming rating of 80, which is based off Football Manager’s 2024 data. According to FM, Chiesa has a higher rating than both Gakpo and Jota – a good sign for Liverpool fans who have doubts about the Italian’s ability.

His next highest score was, probably unsurprisingly, financial value, scored at 78. As mentioned in Anything Liverpool’s Transfer Window Review, the fee of up to £12.5m could be seen as a significant bargain by the end of the season. The Athletic broke this score down into four separate categories with Chiesa given a market value of 20/25, squad cost of 21/25, contract sensibility (which is 4 years long) of 21/25, and resale value of 16/25.

For Risk or Reward, Chiesa scored 77, a score boosted by only missing six games in all competitions last season. However, he did miss over 300 days of the 2021/22 season due to a ACL tear. Chiesa, hopefully, seems to be past his injury problems of old, and whether Liverpool can continue this trend will be a significant factor in the success of the move.

“All things considered, this is an opportunistic move by Liverpool which makes plenty of tactical sense and has high upside potential”

The Athletic

The second lowest rating for the Italian was his season rating of 72, a score tow higher than Dominic Solanke received for context. 2023/2024 was not Chiesa’s most prolific as he managed 11 goals and assists in 25 Serie A starts.

However, his lowest score was in the Tactical Fit ranking, where The Athletic gave him 67, citing his lack of consistent goalscoring and defensive limitations for the score.

Yet the overall high score bodes extremely well for the remainder of the season.
