Despite it only being gameweek three, both teams came into this fixture knowing it would be vital for either side in their pursuit for a top four finish come the end of the season.
It didn’t take long for the action to start at St. James’ Park with Trent Alexander-Arnold nearly getting sent off with what would’ve been a second yellow card after dragging Anthony Gordon down when on the break in the sixth minute.
It was Liverpool who had the first big chance of the game after a powerful, charging run into the box by Luis Diaz who then forced a save out of Nick Pope at his near post.
It was Newcastle, however, who took the lead 25 minutes into the first half. A back pass from Mohamed Salah was miscontrolled by Trent which saw former Evertonian, Anthony Gordon through on goal who calmly slotted it into the back of the next through Alisson’s legs.
Problems got worse for the reds not long after as captain Virgil Van Dijk got a questionable straight red card for taking down Alexander Isak on the edge of the box leaving manager Jurgen Klopp with no option but to make changes, taking Diaz off for Joe Gomez.
Miguel Almiron hit a thunderous strike towards the top corner of the goal in the 35th minute which was brilliantly saved by the Brazilian number one, Alisson.
The Paraguayan almost doubled Newcastle’s lead early on in the second half after hitting the post from a finessed effort just inside the box.
It was Darwin Nunez who broke the deadlock for Liverpool in the 80th minute after coming off the bench and scoring an incredible driven finish past the goalkeeper.
In spectacular fashion, the number nine went onto steal the three points with an almost identical finish which was played through from Salah.
