Liverpool’s new look midfield may be getting another boost in the coming days and weeks, with Roméo Lavia joining the reds. On paper, the midfield revamp has the potential to be special and they seem to fit the Jürgen Klopp ‘mold’ more than first thought.
The anticipated new trio of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Roméo Lavia racked up a higher amount of minutes in all competitions, at their respective clubs last season, compared to all the midfielders possibly leaving Liverpool combined. This hidden stat will surely benefit Klopp’s tactics, with the reds fighting on all fronts again this coming campaign.
Liverpool’s top midfield three who produced the most minutes last season were Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner. Fábio Carvalho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keïta and Arthur Melo shared some minutes through rotation, alongside introductions from the bench.

When comparing the last midfield trio(most minutes) to the potential new midfield, the latter reached 9473 minutes compared to 7396 minutes for the previous crop. Looking at the whole squad of leaving players, they racked up a total of 9072 minutes. These stats show the good work the reds have done at replacing some of their aging legs.

Fabinho, Henderson and Milner produced 3534, 2556 and 1306 minutes, respectively.
Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and Lavia produced 3695, 3308 and 2470 minutes, notably higher than their counterparts.
It’s well known that Klopp likes his players to press from the front, as well as producing some technical ability. The new midfield combination certainly fits both of those profiles very well.
It’s worth adding that the new three are younger than the previous trio, in particular Lavia who’s only 19. Szoboszlai and Mac Allister are 22 and 24. Fabinho, Henderson and Milner are 29, 33 and 37.
Although this isn’t a like-for-like midfield re-build, it certainly brings the fans some excitement and I personally can’t wait to see what it brings.
