With the transfer window already off to a fantastic success, further moves could yet still be made. One position has had supporters on the edge of their seat, a left sided centre back, with any potential arrival being able to learn from Virgil Van Dijk and eventually become his long term successor.

One name that’s been on the media’s lips is Levi Colwill, a dominating young centre half with a superb ball playing ability. These skills suggest he could become one of the best centre half’s around and he certainly classes as the ‘perfect’ Van Dijk successor. Chelsea are tough negotiators and have been adamant that he’s not for sale, however everyone has their price.

In case any move isn’t feasible, it’s worth looking at alternatives. Micky van de Ven is a young Dutch centre half, who has tremendous pace for someone of his size. His stature and qualities are very reminiscent of a young Van Dijk. The only issue is Tottenham negotiating for his signature so any move from the reds would have to be soon.

On the more expensive side of things, Joško Gvardiol is an established centre half who would suit Premier League football extremely well. Price is a concern though but it may just be worth it for a player with his explosiveness and experience. Manchester City have him as a no 1 target so the reds would have to persuade him to join over them.

Castello Lukeba is a more affordable option, though he’s not a like for like replacement. Lukeba is slightly smaller and is more known for ball playing abilities, he would suit Liverpool’s style of play well. Probably the most realistic option and one in budget.

Another option is Benoît Badiashile. One more young Chelsea star who could become an option in the future if Colwill ends up becoming their first choice. Although seemingly not for sale at this stage, it may be worth exploring in the coming windows, especially if the mentioned Colwill takes over. Badiashile with his Premier League experience so far, has performed notably similar to Van Dijk and the prospect of a French duo with Ibrahima Konaté is exciting for both club and country.

It’s worth remembering that Virgil Van Dijk has many years left and that any successor doesn’t necessarily need to be chased yet. If the reds midfield rebuild is anything to go by, the future defence should be in good hands. The current progress should hopefully get the reds back on track in their league form, on paper they certainly look as strong as they come.
