Manchester City vs Liverpool Player Ratings

Liverpool fans in full voice ahead of the Man City game at the Etihad.

On a warm, Saturday lunch-time Liverpool travelled to Manchester to face the high-flying Blues at the Etihad. We knew we were in for a tough game but the 5-0 result still came as a shock to many considering we had beaten Arsenal 4-0 in our last Premier League match. Here are the ratings for each player that featured in today’s fixture:

Simon Mignolet: 5

Mignolet tried his best in throughout the game and without him it could have been worse. However, his overall ability and positioning was nowhere near good enough today and he could have done a lot better.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: 2

The only reason he doesn’t get a 1 is because he tried and he’s young. A terrible performance from the young Englishman and he was at fault for a few of the defensive errors. Also picked up a booking.

Joel Matip: 5

As usual he was our best defender, he looked composed on the ball and won a few headers that came his way. He would have done so much better has he have received an equal pairing with another great centre back like Van Dijk which unfortunately did not come from the Summer Transfer Window.

Ragnar Klavan: 1

Absolutley awful from him today, many question why he even wears the Liverpool shirt. Beyond poor performance and shouldn’t have started ahead of Dejan Lovren.

Alberto Moreno: 3

He was caught out of position as usual and didn’t defend as well as he was expected to. He was good in the first half to link up with Mané but after he was sent off, Moreno seemed to disappear a bit.

Jordan Henderson: 4

Probably joined most hard-working today, he tried his best to win balls back and get the attack going. Unfortunately he again didn’t seem to have the ability we expect from him and he didn’t provide the leadership we looked for.

Referee Jon Moss could have potentially cost Liverpool the game with his harsh brandishing of the Red card to Mané.

Gini Wijnaldum: 3

Again, he tried and did ok in the first half but seemed to completely disappear in the second half. Not good enough, especially after the world class performance he put in against Arsenal in our last fixture.

Emre Can: 4

He did ok, and was the main man in our midfield throughout the game. Crumbled in the second half like the rest though, but still managed to push forward me a bit.

Sadio Mané: 7

He looked superb for the short time he was on the pitch and threatened Man City’s defence heavily. He clashed with City keeper Ederson and received a straight red which in most opinions was too harsh. Big loss for us as we fell apart after he was gone.

Mané looked distraught after receiving his first straight red in a Liverpool shirt.

Roberto Firmino: 6

The Brazilian had a decent game, and was influential in the first half, even creating the brilliant chance for Mané before he clashed with Ederson. Shame he didn’t get too many chances on goal himself but still could have done more.

Mo Salah: 7

He also looked great in the first half, bombing down the right flank leaving Otamendi and Mendy in the dust but his finishing proved to be below par today. One good chance at 1-0 and had he have scored, it would have been a different game. He was brought off at half time but really shouldn’t have been.

Substitutes:

Dominic Solanke: 2

Really didn’t do much as he was brought on when the game was already over.

James Milner: 3

He too came on late but showed a bit of desire to get the midfield working again. Couldn’t have done much more.

Alex Oxelade-Chamberlain: 3

He came on early at half time to replace Salah but didn’t do as well as we’d hoped. He did show a bit of his pace and dribbling but it was already too late to pull back. Two major losses in a row for him, and in my opinion he should have started over Wijnaldum or Henderson.
